Here I want to share a practical way of studying the Korean (Hangul characters). A Hangul character is composed of two or more units. The unit consists of a few consonants and vowels, namely:
14 basic consonants + 5 double consonants
ㄱ | ㄴ | ㄷ | ㄹ | ㅁ | ㅂ | ㅅ | ㅇ | ㅈ | ㅊ | ㅋ | ㅌ | ㅍ | ㅎ |
g | n | d | r | m | b | s | - | j | ch | k | t | p | h |
ㄲ | ㄸ | ㅃ | ㅆ | ㅉ | |||||||||
kk | tt | pp | ss | jj |
6 basic vowels + 15 derivatives (+ i, + y, + w)
ㅏ | ㅓ | ㅗ | ㅜ | ㅡ | ㅣ | ㅐ | ㅔ | ㅚ | ㅟ | ㅢ | |
a | eo | o | u | eu | i | ae | e | oe | wi | ui | |
ㅑ | ㅕ | ㅛ | ㅠ | ㅒ | ㅖ | ||||||
ya | yeo | yo | yu | yae | ye | ||||||
ㅘ | ㅝ | ㅙ | ㅞ | ||||||||
wa | wo | wae | we |
Way of preparation of these units are generally above → below, or above → bottom right →.
From the picture above, note also that there are some consonants that would change the sound when placed under a (final), among others:
ㄹ: from 'r' so 'l'
ㅇ: from no sound to be 'ng'
ㅅ: from 's' so 't'
In conclusion, for the control of Hangul, we actually only need to memorize the form of units 20, 14 base + 6 vocal consonant base. Moreover, we quite understand the patterns of improvisation in each unit, whether didobel, + i, + + w or y. This is what makes writing Korean (Hangul) is much easier to learn than Chinese characters or Hanja.
